This just might be your new hobby! Part of the reason 'adventure' is in our name is because we enjoy trying new things, including activities. When the Proving Ground (TPG) asked us if we wanted to try out their gym, of course we said yes!
Full disclosure: I have little to no upper body strength. I was scared that I would not be able to get to the top, and I can say I was able to touch the top on several 'routes'.
If you've never been to TPG or another bouldering gym, they set colored routes each week and rate their difficulty. V1 is the easiest, and this is about where I stayed. Because they have thick mats and are a reasonable height, you are not harnessed during these climbs. There is a section that allows you to climb with a harness and belay down which is also fun!
Trying a new hobby can be extremely intimidating and we would give the employees 5 stars for being so helpful and encouraging throughout the whole process.
If you are interested in learning more, they do offer a Bouldering Basics course that teaches you everything you need to know. After the one hour class, you have a week of free admission to see if you'd like to become a member of the gym. For the ladies, there is a special group called the Midwest Boulder Babes that meet-up every Wednesday night. They are very welcoming to beginners so check it out!
